Research Interests
My dissertation research investigated why aid INGOs recruit such a dramatically different set of local actors over time, and to what effect. I built my argument through a combination of global data and ethnographic fieldwork on Somaliland. This research was supported by the Social Science Research Council, Boren Fellowship, the Cosmos Scholarship, and the GWU Department of Political Science.
Beyond my dissertation I'm engaged in several projects on international organizations, aid, conflict, and displacement. The first project examines micro-level determinants of change in aid organizations. The second project investigates the nature and effects of the ‘accountability revolution’ in humanitarian aid. The third project examines the role of ethnography in studying international organizations.
